With the current trend on belly piercing, my sister and wife made the decision at one point to have their navels pierced. They had the procedure done at a local tattoo and piercing shop. However they never anticipated a few things prior to getting their belly buttons pierced.
How to clean
The one who did the piercing on my wife made some clear instructions on cleaning. The pierced area should be kept free from infection through regular cleaning. It was important that my wife follow the necessary instructions when it came to cleaning. However her belly button became infected all the same. Thankfully the infection cleared shortly afterward after treatment.
Nonetheless there were times when the infection returned especially after replacing the stud, but after some time the infection eventually subsided. From then on I started buying her stuff for her belly button piercing and not just standard jewelry like necklaces.
The Pregnancy factor
When my wife became pregnant however, it was another concern altogether. She decided to remove the ring but to expect that the piercing would still be there even after giving birth. After nine months, the piercing closed and necessitated another procedure to get the piercing back.
The second procedure was more complicated but she went with it anyway. It was due to the presence of scar tissue but the results turned out fine.
Then she became pregnant after five years. My wife decided to keep the belly ring and go on with the piercing. She was deeply mistaken however as the hole became bigger during the time that her belly began to expand. A big hole was found where there was once a small piercing.
Finally after her latest pregnancy she made the decision to close her piercing once and for all. While she was a bit disappointed, she knew that she had to do it, especially after all the procedures. It had been fun however, and I actually miss having to buy her some accessories for her belly piercing.
