Piercing is known to mankind since ages, it is an old fashion that is back again. In many tribes piercing different body parts reflect many spiritual and social trends. Nose piercing is considered very trendy now a day it gives you a funky and modern look. Many teens are afraid of nose piercing because of the pain full infections which generally follow nose piercing. You should be very careful in this regard as unsterilized tools can cause hepatitis and many other dangerous infections. There are many reasons of infection like unsterilized instruments, very sensitive skin or improper care of the newly pierced nose.

Your initial reaction when you detect the signs of infection might be feeling anxiety and showing panic in its treatment. Do not panic and carefully analyze it, as you should keep in mind that infection could be a phase of healing process of the pierced area. As a needle rupture you skin and this triggers natural healing and defense system of your body. So consider this infection as a temporary phase of healing which will lead to complete healing of wound. Generally a little inflammation or irritation is common after piercing, but you have to be careful in handling any wound. This mild infection could be an alarming signal for serious infection. I suggest you to take all the precautionary measures in order to avoid infection as it is wisely said” prevention is better than cure”. You should consult a dermatologist to cease these mild abnormalities from developing into a graver infection.

There are few elementary measures that can avoid the unfortunate and painful nose piercing infection. For instance, never touch the pierced area with your hands. Your hands are generally habitat of many bacteria and fugal spores. Apparently clean hands have many infectious agents on them. Secondly people generally do not bother about the quality and metal of stud. You should make sure that you do not have any allergic reactions with that metal and stud should be properly sterilize. If you detect any sort of allergy with any metal immediately remove the metallic jewellary from your nose. As few allergic reactions are very fast and lethal, quickly seek medical assistance to avoid any medical emergencies. In the case of any other symptoms of infections, keep the wound clean and apply an antiseptic ointment to the area before you go for out doors, on work or even before going to bed. If the wound swells or you feel pus in it, then when it subsides, move the piercing in different position at lease once in seven days, but with care as mishandling could make the wound even worse. You should avoid any disturbance to infected area in taking regular bath. Try to avoid any accidental ruing of the infected area. I hope that if you will follow these safety instructions you can avoid nose infections. Do not follow any home remedies from your colleagues or friends. Avoid apply any mud or fruit mask during healing period as any clogged particle can cause infection in the wound.

Nose Piercing Bump

August 15th, 2011 · Nose Piercing

Many reasons can cause the development of bump, few more common reasons are

  • If you are fidgeting with the stud in your pierced nose. Your hands have dirt and unhygienic microbes which may result in a bump around the pierced area. Most of the times the bumps are filled with pus and are very pain full.
  • Some times the technique and the judgment of the artist piercing your nose goes wrong, it may lead to a bump.
  • You should not change nose piercing jewelry very often. If by chance you have wore infected  jewellery it can cause inflammation and nose piercing bump
  • The size and type of the metallic jewellery also trigger the infection of nose piercing. In order to avoid such complication I suggest to wear nose piercing rings or pins that are not very small in size as it may reduce the diameter of pierced hole.

Many women discover bumps after two or three weeks, most women have a nose piercing bump just around the hole. A simple solution of reducing this malicious bump is given below.

If you discover a disgusting and painful bump then, first measure you should take is “immediately replace your nose stud or ring”

Always wear a fine quality stainless steel stud; these surgical grade metallic studs are made of titanium or platinum. Don’t change your stud yourself. You should go to a standard jewelry shop, take their expert opinion in choosing a proper size stud for you.

Once you have a quality stud don’t change it for at least 2 months. You should clean your bump regularly with a saline solution of sea salt three times a day with a warm cloth. Exercise this procedure until your bump completely disappears. You can prepare this saline solution very easily, just take one cup of Luke warm water and add one tea spoon of sea salt in it, stir it for a minute and it is ready. Never use iodized salt instead of sea salt

You can apply tea tree oil instead of salt solution. Never add anything in tea tree oil. Soak a cotton plug in tea tree oil and apply on your bump three times a day. As you exercise this procedure for few days, your bump will gradually vanish.

Prefer the high quality jewelry which has been manufactured under hygienic condition. Do no blow your nose with force, care fully wipe face after every face wash. As any irritation can cause infection and it will result in a nose bump. Never use alcohol or hydrogen per oxide solution to sterilize your stud or to clean your infected area, it could further complicate the condition.

Always wash your hand with a good antiseptic soap before you touch your nose stud. Apply some antiseptic cream or lotion before going out, as dirt and bacteria in air can cause infection. Never forget to clean your nose before going to bed as at night time your skin secret sebum, it can accelerate the infection rate.

Modern Belly Button Piercing

August 5th, 2011 · Belly Piercing

Belly button piercing also known as navel piercing is becoming more common nowadays. It simply involves a puncture or a piercing made into the body part after which a piece of jewellery is inserted into the puncture. When getting your belly button or navel pierced, the actual navel is not pierced, it is just the outer skin or what is called the upper rim of the belly button. This kind of piercing is more commonly seen in females rather than males. Belly button piercing may heal with in a very short period of time like any other piercing or may take extended healing time in the case of any complications i.e. 8 months to a year. The rejection rate of such a piercing by the body is lower than that of surface piercings like ear piercings.

Modern and popular culture has played a major role in making this type of body piercing so common these days. The trend of body piercing, especially navel piercing started in the 90s and it became famous when bands like Aerosmith and female actors like Alicia Silverstone were seen supporting this trend. Nowadays this type of piercing is most common amongst teenagers aged 15 and above. Various types of jewellery is present in the market these days from which a person interested in piercing can choose and it is immensely important to choose the right type of jewellery as every individual has varying skin sensitivity and any error can lead to skin infections and other complications.

Jewellery is mostly available in stainless steel, gold, silver and titanium. Choosing the right type especially during healing time is of immense importance. During healing time the safest and most cost effective choice is stainless steel since it has the least chances of causing any type of harmful reaction with the puncture. Other safe types are gold which should be at least 18 karat and titanium, which however are expensive than stainless steel. Wearing silver jewellery around the navel is not a good idea because silver causes a chemical reaction that causes the skin to darken around it which can be permanent. Gold worn should be 75% pure gold during healing time i.e.18 karat and 14 karat after the wound is healed. Gold filled jewellery should never be worn in piercing since the artificial filling wears off easily and contains a metal nickel to which many people can be allergic. Titanium is a metal that is also used for surgical procedures by doctors and is highly recommended to be worn be those getting any type of body piercings. However, this type of metal is the most expensive amongst others. It is also advised that people with highly sensitive skin who can be prone to metal allergies can use substitutes such as nylon or Teflon which are least likely to cause any possible allergic reaction.

No matter what type of piercing you intend to get, you first should thoroughly research about its procedure, the complications, any allergic reactions and safety regarding the procedure. You firstly should check whether the environment and the equipment the place uses are properly sterilized and clean, whether the person piercing is competent enough and lastly whether your skin is prone to allergies or reactions or not.

Most teenagers nowadays like to flaunt accessories along with their clothes, however once they go through the experience of getting a piercing done; they realize that it is not all fun as it sounds. As the saying goes “no pain, no gain,” this phrase can be truly applied to piercings. The skin of the cartilage is said to be thicker than that of the neck and even the forehead since it contains bone too. The cartilage is usually pierced using a piercing needle and is done with hand so as to avoid possible chances of infection.

Now when it comes to cartilage piercing, there are several types of piercing. The ear consists of several parts, starting from the top to the bottom; daith, rook, helix, industrial and conch piercing. The lower part of the ear consists of the lobe and the tragus. However, since the cartilage consists of only the upper parts of the ear, this article will explain them in detail. Daith piercing is done on the outer fold of the cartilage. The healing time of this piercing takes from six to eight weeks and usually micro jewellery and tiny ball-shaped jewellery are worn in this part. The uppermost part of the ear is called the rook and it contains the toughest and thickest mass in the ear and contains flesh too hence it is the most painful amongst the rest of cartilage piercings. This type of piercing may take up to several months to heal. The helix is also part of the upper ear cartilage, and is very sensitive to infections hence a small, hollow piercing needle is used to puncture it. Jewellery such as studs or small hoops can be used for ornamentation purposes. Moreover, the healing process may take six to eight months to heal. Conch piercing consists of two types; outer conch and inner conch. The outer conch is the upper and outer part of the cartilage, while the inner conch is the inner part of the cartilage, this type of piercing also takes six to eight months to heal. The last type, the industrial piercing, is when the helix is pierced twice to hold different types of jewellery. This type of piercing takes up to almost a year to heal and professional expertise is required for this procedure.

There are certain dangers and risks associated with cartilage piercings. Infections are caused due to a number of reasons; using unhygienic or not properly cleaned equipment, wearing allergic or tight jewellery, constant fidgeting with the healing area with unclean hands and using illegal methods of piercing. All these things may prone the pierced area towards infections, swelling, reddening and irritation in the area, experiencing pain and pus (a yellow fluid discarding from the area). Moreover, due to inexperienced handling, the tissue around the piercing may get damaged due to which the area around it may get scarred permanently.
