The labret piercing is typically a part of the lip piercing and falls under the body piercing types. Many of might not be aware of the term labret. The term labret originates from the Latin word “labrum” which is referred to the lip. The labret piercing is a kind of lip piercing that applies to the portion above the chin and being attached to the lower lip region. The labret piercing is often called the tongue pillar as it is pierced through the lower lip.

The labret piercing must be accompanied in the same fashion as the general lip piercing and the saline solution is of utmost importance here as well. The labret piercing is done in a methodical manner where measurements are marked for positioning the labrets. The distinct marks are given by clamps usually the Forester clamps. The most important thing is the placement of the labrets in the oral region. The labrets are placed facing away from the jaw and thus they are placed at an angle with the jaw. The main motive always remains in order to keep the needle away from the jaws. The piercing needles are clamped along with the desired jewelry.

There are some labret variations that vary in style. In all there are three labret variations namely spider bites, viper bites and snakebites. The spider bites refer to two different piercing on a single side of the lower lip. The snake bites refer to two different piercing on two different sides of the lower lip. The viper bites are similar to the spider bites more or less but differ only in their gaps. The viper bites have extra gaps between two piercing on the same side of the lower lip.

The labret piercing has originated from the ancient Mayan and the Aztec civilizations where the labret piercing had been the symbol of status among men. The labrets in the ancient culture were not meant for women and only men showcased them as a symbol. It was also used among the coaster tribes in the ancient culture. The difference in the type of labrets worn distinguished the ancient tribes based upon different geographical locations. So much like many other body piercing, the labret piercing also originated from the ancient civilizations of the human kind.

The approximate healing period for the labret piercing is 2-3 months and the healing process is enhanced by the use of the antiseptic solution. For maintaining the labret piercing in the best possible way, the piercing must be washed with saline solution once in a day. The mouth must be then washed with saline solution and ice may be used as well. During the healing period, too much of hot and spicy dished must be avoided. In any case, pulling or moving the piercing must be avoided, as the piercing are the blood stream openings.

The labret piercing is thus a sensitive lip piercing process, which must ensure safety of the jaws and the tissues around. The lightweight labret jewelry adds a lot of elegance to the portion above your chin.
